William A. Rosoff has had prominent roles in both law and business. In his legal practice, he has represented clients in different industries in both commercial and tax areas, including mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, and other complex corporate transactions involving public and large privately held companies operating nationally and internationally. Between January 1996 and March 2011, he was the president and vice chair of the board of directors of Advanta Corporation, which was one of the largest issuers of credit cards in the United States. Before that, he was a longtime leader of the law firm of Wolf, Block, Schorr & Solis-Cohen, where he served at different times as chair of the executive committee and chair of the tax department. Earlier in his career, he was an instructor with the University of Pennsylvania Law School from 1968 to 1969 and a law clerk to the Honorable Abraham L. Freedman with the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit from 1967 to 1968.
Mr. Rosoff has served as an outside advisor to the U.S. Treasury Department and has spoken extensively on tax matters, including presentations to the National Office of the Internal Revenue Service and Harvard Law School’s Fund for Tax and Fiscal Research. He has also served on a number of policy and advisory boards of tax organizations, including Tax Analysts and Commerce Clearing House. In addition, he had a leading role in the American Law Institute’s Proposals on Partnership Taxation, a number of which became law.
Mr. Rosoff graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School magna cum laude in 1967 and from Temple University with high honors in 1964. He is a member of both the Pennsylvania and New York Bar.
Mr. Rosoff has been listed in the Best Lawyers in America and several Who’s Who publications. He and his wife were the 2017 recipients of the Martin D. Ginsburg Award presented by Cedille Records, a nonprofit organization producing and widely disseminating classical recordings by emerging artists. He is also a member of the board of directors of the Rothman Institute Orthopaedic Foundation.
