Inspired to enter the fields of medicine and ophthalmology from a young age, Dr. Gary G. Brown desired to aid patients whose eyesight was declining. Attending Colgate University, he received a Bachelor of Science in 1971, followed by an MD from the SUNY Upstate Medical University in 1975. Subsequently interning at Grady Hospital affiliated with Emory University for the following year, he then became a resident and fellow at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia between 1976 and 1981.
Since 1981, Dr. Brown has been a physician at Mid Atlantic Retina in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania. Likewise, he has also been a director at the Wills Eye Hospital since 2003, having been chief of retina service for a decade. Since 2005, he has further served as the chief medical officer and director of comparative effectiveness and pharmacoeconomics at the Center for Value Based Medicine. To prepare for his role, he earned a Master of Business Administration in strategic management from St. Joseph’s University in 1998.
Alongside his primary career responsibilities, Dr. Brown was the president and chairman of the board of directors of the Pennsylvania Physician Health Plan, Inc., in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, for two years, as well as a professor at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. A frequent speaker in his field, he has authored or co-authored 12 textbooks, three novels and more than 600 scientific papers. He also co-authored “Evidence-Based to Value-Based Medicine” with his wife, Dr. Melissa Brown, and Dr. Sanjay Sharma. The foreword of the text was written by Thomas Scully, Dr. Brown’s longtime mentor and the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. A past editor of Current Science in Ophthalmology from 1992 to 2009, Dr. Brown has also contributed myriad articles to professional journals.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Brown was the recipient of the Senior Honor Award and Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 2019. Named among the Top Ophthalmologists in the United States since 2003 and one of Castle Connolly’s America’s Best Doctors in America since 1996, he was also highlighted in the Wall Street Journal on February 5, 2019.
