Interested in chemistry from a very young age, Alma Lyman Burlingame, Ph.D., attended the University of Rhode Island, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in 1959. Inspired to progress further into academia by a young faculty member, he later earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1962. Relocating across the country to California, Dr. Burlingame attended his first academic appointment at the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as an assistant professor from 1963 to 1968 and associate chemist from 1968 to 1972. From 1972 to 1978, he was a research chemist. Since that time, he has been serving the University of California, San Francisco, as a professor. During his tenure, he also acted as a professor at University College London from 1996 to 2002.
A U.S. Army veteran, Dr. Burlingame also serves on review panels at the University of California, San Francisco, in an effort to share his wealth of knowledge with the academic community. Likewise, he was recently a university fellow at the Hong Kong Baptist University in 2017, having previously been a visiting professor at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in London, England, from 1993 to 1994. Impressively, he was appointed a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Married with three children, Dr. Burlingame is most proud of the influence he has had on lunar exploration, as he served on several of the planning operations. In recognition of his advancements in the field, he was named a Guggenheim Foundation Fellow in 1970.
