A celebrated figure in the fields of finance and higher education, Douglas M. Patterson, Ph.D., has accrued approximately 50 years of excellence in his areas of expertise. A professor in the Department of Finance, Insurance and Business Law at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University since 1980, Dr. Patterson previously held the roles of associate professor, visiting associate professor, assistant professor, lecturer in finance and teaching assistant at such commendable institutions as the University of California at Santa Barbara, the University of Michigan, and the University of Wisconsin between 1972 and 1999. Prior to delving into the realm of academia, Dr. Patterson served as an electrical engineer at Westinghouse Electric Corporation from 1968 to 1971.

To prepare for his upcoming roles, Dr. Patterson underwent extensive education, first receiving a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering and Master of Business Administration at the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1968 and 1972, respectively. He subsequently earned his coveted Doctor of Philosophy from the same academic institution in 1978. Among his other notable accomplishments, Dr. Patterson has authored and co-authored several journal articles in professional publications like Macroeconomics Dynamics, Econometric Reviews, and the Journal of Business and Economic Statistics.

Awarded countless grants to universities across the United States and abroad, Dr. Patterson has also hosted a myriad of conferences and workshops in San Francisco, Calif.; Atlanta, Ga.; Raleigh, N.C.; Chicago, Ill.; New York, N.Y.; Austin, Texas; Germany; Italy; England; and the Netherlands. Recognized as a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who’s Who, Dr. Patterson is the recipient of a Certificate of Teaching Excellence from the College of Business at Virginia Tech in 1983.
