
Dr. Raymond L. Smith, a distinguished medical professional and university professor, draws upon over 55 years of professional experience. Since 1976, he has been affiliated with the Tower Health Reading Hospital Medical Center and is currently recognized as the division chief of the Hyperbaric Center and Wound Care Division. With expertise in plastic and reconstructive surgery, he is highly regarded for his steady hand, anatomical knowledge, and sense of balance, having garnered much acclaim over the decades. In addition to this role, Dr. Smith has been an assistant professor of surgery at the Drexel University School of Medicine since 2022.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Smith served as an active, full-time surgeon in private practice in Reading, Pennsylvania, between 1976 and 2004. Concurrently, he was a plastic surgery chief at Reading Hospital from 1994 to 2004 and at St. Joseph Hospital from 1985 to 1989, having been affiliated with St. Joseph Hospital since 1976. To prepare for his career, Dr. Smith pursued higher education at Ursinus College, receiving a Bachelor of Science in 1962. He went on to obtain a Doctor of Medicine from the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University in 1966 and completed a residency in general surgery at the Graduate Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Following these accomplishments, Dr. Smith was chief resident in general surgery at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania. Subsequently, he completed a residency in plastic surgery at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center at Pennsylvania State University in 1976.
Notably, Dr. Smith is a lifetime member and fellow of the American College of Surgeons. To remain abreast of medical developments, he also maintains active membership in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Undersea Hyperbaric Medical Society, and the Lipoplasty Society of North America, among other organizations. Since 2023, he has also been a member of the American Legion. Furthermore, he is a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
As a testament to his success, Dr. Smith was awarded the 50-Year Achievement Award from the Berks County Medical Society in 2017 and 2018. Looking toward the future, he aims to continue practicing plastic surgery and mentoring emerging medical professionals in the field.
