Ever since he was a teenager, Robert B. Dean has been interested in buildings, construction, and the history of building. Architecture was a natural career choice for him. To prepare for his career, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania in 1971, and a Master of Architecture from Columbia University in 1976. After receiving his degrees, he went on to serve as a staff architect with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill Architects in New York from 1976 to 1977. He moved around to various firms in New York before venturing into private practice in New York and Syracuse from 1979 to 1985. Finally, in 1986, Mr. Dean established Dean Design, Inc. in New Canaan, Connecticut, where he continues to serve as president.

Before establishing Dean Design, Inc., Mr. Dean offered his expertise to the field as an adjunct associate professor at Columbia University and as an assistant professor at Syracuse University. He has also contributed to articles and professional journals throughout his career. Civically, Mr. Dean served as an adviser to the New Canaan Preservation Alliance of the Fairfield County Preservation Network. He currently sits on the board of finance for the town of Redding.
