A contributing figure in the health care industry, Ruth Leyse Wallace, PhD, has accrued more than 40 years of professional experience in her field. Serving as an adjunct faculty member at San Diego Mesa College from 1999 until her retirement, Dr. Leyse Wallace was previously employed as a clinical provider with the Group Health Medical Association from 1991 to 1998 and an adjunct faculty member with Pima Community College from 1993-1994. However, much of her career was serving as a clinical dietitian with Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital, HCA Willow Park Hospital, The Menninger Foundation and Osawatomie State Hospital. She specialized in nutritional approaches to mental illness, including alcohol and drug abuse, eating disorders and other psychiatric diagnoses.
In preparation for her career, Dr. Leyse Wallace first earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California, Davis in 1968, followed by a Master of Science degree from The University of Kansas in 1971 while completing her dietetic internship at The University of Kansas Medical Center. She concluded her education in 1998 receiving a Doctor of Philosophy degree from The University of Arizona.
In an effort to share knowledge with the medical community, Dr. Leyse Wallace has authored three books: “Nutrition and Mental Health” in 2013, “Linking Nutrition to Mental Health: A Scientific Exploration” in 2008 and “The Metaparadigm of Clinical Dietetics: Derivation and Applications” in 2007. In addition she has contributed articles to professional journals within her areas of expertise.
In recognition of her achievements, Dr. Leyse Wallace was honored for her excellence in 2009 as the recipient of the “Excellence in Practice in Mental Illness” award from the Behavioral Health Nutrition Dietetic Practice Group of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. She accepted an invitation to present at the national conference of the National Alliance on Mental Illness in 2012. In addition, Dr. Leyse Wallace is listed in the 26th through 28th editions of Marquis Who’s Who of American Woman.
