Ruth Ann Higgins has served the state of Colorado for more than 45 years as a social worker and educator. A certified teacher, licensed clinical social worker and certified medical social worker, Ms. Higgins serves Exempla Lutheran Hospice Care as a clinical social worker, where she offers care and emotional, social, and spiritual support for patients and their families in end-of-life scenarios. Furthermore, since 1981, she has been a social worker at Columbine Counseling Center. To prepare for a fruitful career, she earned a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern College in 1966 and a Master of Arts from the University of Colorado in 1978.

Upon graduating from Northwestern College, Ms. Higgins worked as a teacher for Adams 12 Five Star Schools, a public school district in Colorado. Subsequently, she continued her teaching career at Clark Air Force Base for the U.S. Department of Defense in the Philippines, before accepting a teaching job in Jefferson County Public Schools district. Ms. Higgins ventured into the field of social work in 1977, when she joined the Mental Health Center of Boulder County. She returned to Adams 12 Five Star Schools in 1985, serving the district as a social worker for two decades.

Recipient of the 1994 Honorary Mention Counselor of the Year Award from the Colorado School Counselors Association, Ms. Higgins formerly served on the board of directors of Health and Human Services for the City and County of Broomfield. As an active member of society striving for the betterment of her community, Ms. Higgins was also a counselor trainer for Up with People, an educational organization helping create intercultural understanding through volunteer services.

In recognition of her accomplishments, Ms. Higgins has been listed in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and healthcare, Who’s Who in the West and Who’s Who of American Women.
