Howard Shigeharu Mende was encouraged by his father, a mechanic, to enter the field of engineering. Drawing upon an early interest in understanding how objects worked, he attended the University of Hawaii and earned a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering in 1969. Relocating to Anaheim, California, upon his graduation, he was hired by Rockwell International as a member of technical staff I in 1970. From there, he transferred to Rockwell’s Los Angeles office in 1971 and was subsequently promoted to member of technical staff II in 1973 – a position he held until 1977. During this time, he obtained a Master of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of Southern California in 1975.
Departing from Rockwell temporarily for six years to serve as a development engineer for AiRsch. Manufacturing Company in Torrance, California, Mr. Mende returned to Rockwell in 1984 as a member of technical staff IV until 1986. In 1987, he joined Defense Contracts Management West in Santa Ana, California, as a mechanical engineer. He was promoted to the rank of electronics engineer in 1994, where he remains today. Throughout his career, he has been fortunate to work closely with talented individuals who were working on defense projects, including the Minuteman Missile. Impressively, Mr. Mende worked closely with Dr. George Robert Talbert, who acknowledged Mr. Mende in his book “The Philosophy of Unified Science” in the 1970s.
Alongside his primary endeavors, Mr. Mende also served as a lecturer at Pacific State University in Los Angeles between 1974 and 1975. Maintaining affiliation with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, he has always valued the education he received in mechanical engineering, noting the importance of training in more effective and efficient manners based upon technical methodologies.
A native of Hilo, Hawaii, Mr. Mende currently resides in Torrance, California. A registered professional engineer in the state of California, he enjoys gardening and doing home improvements in his spare time. Looking toward the future, he intends to continue working for the government and eventually pursue retirement. To attest to his success, he has been selected for inclusion in myriad editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in the West, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in Finance and Business, and Who’s Who in Finance and Industry.
