Bishop Gerald T. Walsh has always possessed strong ties to the Catholic Church, even from a young age. Naturally inclined to help others through their life hardships, he felt that within the Catholic faith, he could make a genuine difference in other individuals’ lives. Ordained to priesthood at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in New York in 1967, he first served as a parochial vicar of the Holy Trinity Parish from 1967 to 1980.
Following this appointment, Bishop Walsh joined Catholic Charities as director of family and children’s services in 1980, holding the role until 1989 when he was named pastor of the Church of the Incarnation. Notably, Cardinal John O’Connor appointed Bishop Walsh to serve as secretary to the cardinal in 1996 and two years later, Bishop Walsh was appointed vicar for development at the Archdiocese of New York. Ordained auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of New York in 2004, he was subsequently named rector of his alma mater, Saint Joseph’s Seminary, in 2007.
Currently, Bishop Walsh excels in his role of vicar for clergy with the Archdiocese of New York, a position he first assumed in 2012. Alongside his primary career responsibilities, he has been an associate chaplain with the Knights of Columbus of New York for nearly 40 years.
Recalling that the highlight of his career has been his uncanny ability to relate to individuals of nearly every age and ethnic group, Bishop Walsh was motivated and inspired by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, the De La Salle Brothers and the Sisters of Mercy.
