Dr. Harvinder S. Luthra is a distinguished past educator of medicine and rheumatologist who amassed 50 years of excellence in his fields prior to his retirement in 2017. Becoming interested in medicine after observing patients being treated poorly by the health care industry, he wanted to become involved in a growing movement to assist patients in their treatment modalities. Deciding upon rheumatology because there were a limited number of doctors in the field, he also wanted to help patients obtain the correct diagnosis for their ailments.

Subsequent to completing a residency in internal medicine in 1972, Dr. Luthra commenced his professional career as a trainee in rheumatology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, a role he held for two years. From there, he was promoted to chair of the Division of Rheumatology at the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine of the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science between 1996 and 2004. While serving in this capacity, Dr. Luthra was given the title of John Finn Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine in 1995, holding the position for 22 years until attaining emeritus status in 2017. He also served the School of Medicine as vice chair of the Department of Medicine for Research.

Alongside his primary responsibilities, Dr. Luthra enjoyed his time spent as a member of the American Board of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology, citing this role as one of his career highlights. He is also renowned for his research in collagen-inducted arthritis in mice and the HLA-B27 molecule’s role in arthritis. Sitting on the board of directors of the American Board of Internal Medicine, he was chair of the subspecialty of rheumatology from 1998 to 2002. Further, he has contributed his expertise to the field by authoring a number of articles in esteemed medical journals.

Dr. Luthra maintains affiliation with the Arthritis Foundation and the American College of Rheumatology. In recognition of his exceptional achievements in the field, he was selected for inclusion in several Who’s Who publications beginning in 1997. The proud father of three children – Payal, Gauri and Sonaar – and grandfather of three grandchildren – Jahana, Sacha and Rheem – Dr. Luthra has been happily married to his wife Annu for many years.
