Commencing his career after receiving a doctorate degree in 1973, Dr. Donald M. Steinwachs served as an assistant professor of health services administration at Johns Hopkins University until 1979. Remaining with the university for the duration of his career, he subsequently served as an associate professor of health policy and management from 1979 to 1986 and full professor of health policy and management from 1986 until attaining emeritus status in 2016. During his tenure, he also served as the director of the Health Services Research and Development Center from 1982 to 2010, chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management from 1994 to 2005 and interim provost in 2007.
Alongside his primary career responsibilities, Dr. Steinwachs sat on the board of directors of Mathematical Policy Research, Inc., and was a secretary of the advisory committee of the Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington, DC. Civically involved as well, he served as president and sat on the board of directors of the Foundation for Health Service Research and was active with the Governor’s Commission on Health Policy Research and Finance.
A contributor of articles to esteemed journals, Dr. Steinwachs initially served as a research officer and captain in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1975 during his academic studies at the University of Arizona. Involved in system engineering, he was afforded the opportunity to utilize computer systems to supplement his studies. Notably, he founded the development of systems, looking at data on health and wellbeing and utilized a powerful set of tools that was congruent with the changing times of the 1960s.
Born in Boise, Idaho, Dr. Steinwachs currently resides in Lutherville, Maryland, with his wife, Sharon. In his spare time, he enjoys sailing in the Chesapeake Bay and traveling across the globe, particularly to Switzerland.
