A former pharmaceutical and chemicals executive of nearly 45 years, Joseph G. Temple Jr. commenced his career with the Dow Chemical Company in Midland, Michigan, in 1951. Soon ascending the ranks to general manager of Dow’s Michigan Manufacturing Division, he then served as vice president of marketing for Dow Chemical USA before becoming president of Dow Chemical Latin America
in Coral Gables, Florida. Attaining many leadership positions throughout his tenure with the manufacturing giant, he was named to Dow’s board of directors, as well as became the president and chief executive officer of Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals in Cincinnati. After Dow acquired Marion Laboratories in 1989, Mr. Temple served as chairman and chief executive officer of Marion Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, Inc., retiring as vice president in 1995 and as executive vice president of the Dow Chemical Company.
Alongside his primary career responsibilities, Mr. Temple formerly served as a trustee of the Committee for Economic Development. He sat on the board of fellows of the Saginaw Valley State University and has been a member of the President’s Council at Purdue University since 1978. Likewise, he is a past board of directors member of the Society of the Plastics Industry and Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, as well as member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the Management Association.
Developing an interest in chemistry and mathematics in the formative stages of his life while growing up in the flourishing city of Chicago, Mr. Temple soon attended Purdue University, where he completed a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering in 1951. In recognition of his excellence in his industry, Purdue University presented him with an honorary Doctor of Engineering in 1988.
