Desiring to delve into medicine since he was 8 years old, Earle B. Weiss, MD, is an acclaimed physician and educator who is a lauded member of the medical community. Serving as medical director and senior consultant for the Foundation for Research in Bronchial Asthma and Related Diseases from 1988 to 1990, he has also served Tufts University as an instructor of medicine, assistant professor of medicine, associate professor of medicine and lecturer in medicine. Likewise, he was an appointed honorary member in the department of astronomy at Wellesley College in 2013. Alongside these appointments, Dr. Weiss served multiple facilities and universities in both executive and instructional roles, such as Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he is a past senior pulmonary research scientist in the Department of Anesthesia and Anesthesia Research, and Harvard Medical School, where he was a visiting professor in the Faculty of Medicine. Likewise, he also served the University of Massachusetts Medical School as an associate professor and full professor of medicine and Worcester Polytechnic Institute as an associate professor of life sciences.
Dr. Weiss additionally contributed nearly 70 peer-reviewed articles to several journals, many of which were reprinted in other languages, as well as abstracts, book chapters and audio tapes. He has authored three books regarding bronchial asthma. Among his notable achievements, Dr. Weiss is most renowned for theorizing the role of calcium and oxygen in toxic products causing asthma and airways reactivity, as well as introducing and pioneering the use of controlled mechanical ventilation in acute respiratory failure of chronic lung disease and asthma. He also studied the effects of thyroid hormones upon cerebral cortex maturation and first isolation of alpha-hydroxy acid oxidase, among other subjects of interest. He was the first to establish the Dr. Earle B. Weiss MD Student Research Fellowship at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in 2005 to support the early education of medical students and encourage research interests. Additionally, he endowed the Annie Jump Cannon Research Fellowship in Astronomy in the Department of Astronomy at Wellesley College and a Research Fellowship in the Department of Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The former president, president-elect, representative councilor and general councilor of the American Thoracic Society, Dr. Weiss is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Chest Physicians, and a past associate fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. He has garnered myriad accolades since 1970 in both educational and medical roles. He received the Award for Meritorious Service, Teaching and Patient Care from Boston City Hospital in 1971 and was presented with the first annual Dr. J. KcKeever MD Award for Outstanding Educator by the St. Vincent Hospital and University of Massachusetts Medical School in 1973. The recipient of the Chadwick Medal from the Massachusetts Thoracic Society in 1990 for distinguished contributions to the study and treatment of tuberculosis and other thoracic diseases, he was also named a Professor Extraordinaire by the University of Guadalajara Medical School in Mexico. Impressively, he was named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who’s Who in 2017.
