From a young age, Robert E. Rubin was interested in politics. In addition, his father was a lawyer, which influenced him to explore the field of law as well. In 1960, he graduated summa cum laude from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts in economics. He then studied postgraduate courses at the London School of Economics before receiving a Bachelor of Laws from Yale University in 1964. After obtaining his law degree, he became an associate at Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton in New York City. While working in New York, Mr. Rubin also became interested in the finance industry, which led to him moving on to the Goldman Sachs Group Inc., where he served in various capacities for more than two decades.
In 1993, Mr. Rubin ventured into politics as assistant to the president for economic policy at the White House in Washington, D.C. He then became director of the National Economic Council and was eventually appointed secretary of the U.S. Department of the Treasury, where he served for four years under former President Bill Clinton. After his government appointment, Mr. Rubin joined Citigroup Inc. as chairman of the executive committee of the board and became a fellow of the Harvard Corporation before becoming vice chairman and then co-chairman of the Council on Foreign Relations. Today, he is a senior counselor for Centerview Partners LLC in New York.
For his ongoing professional accomplishments, Mr. Rubin has received several honorary degrees from Yeshiva University, New York University, the University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, Yale University, and Harvard University. In addition to his primary professional appointments, he also currently serves on the board of trustees of Mount Sinai Health System and as chairman of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation. Civically, Mr. Rubin has been active with local and national political efforts for decades. Currently, he is on the finance committee of Harvard University. In 2003, he chronicled his varied career in the book, “In an Uncertain World: Tough Choices from Wall Street to Washington,” which was co-authored with Jacob Weisberg. In his spare time, Mr. Rubin enjoys fly fishing and reading.
