After earning a Bachelor of Science from the University of Florida in 1961, Dr. Bossen went on to earn a Doctor of Medicine from Duke University in 1965. He commenced his career as an intern and resident at the medical center from 1965 to 1970. Dr. Bossen was certified by the American Board of Pathology in 1970.
Exhibiting patriotism, Dr. Bossen served the United States Army Reserve from 1965 to 1970 and fulfilled active duty in the United States Army from 1970 to 1972, achieving the rank of major. He received a Certificate of Achievement and a Commendation medal for his work in skeletal muscle disease.
Dr. Bossen was motivated to pursue his current field due to his interest in the process of disease. Notably, he was on the pathology team for Duke University’s first kidney transplants. His main interests since joining the faculty at Duke have been in Skeletal Muscle Pathology and Head and Neck Pathology with publications in both areas as well as in General Surgical Pathology. During his career, he was Associate Director of Cytopathology, Chief of Surgical Pathology and Director of Anatomic Pathology at Duke. He achieved the rank of professor of pathology in 1981 and has continued working at Duke, attaining emeritus status in 2013. He continues to perform limited duties for the department in areas of quality assurance and research. Dr. Bossen currently belongs to the American Medical Association, the North Carolina Medical Society, the American Society of Clinical Pathology, and the medical honor society, Alpha Omega Alpha. He has been honored in such publications as Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who’s Who in Science and Engineering.
