With an affinity for helping others from a young age, Stephen Kalani Brady, MD always knew he wanted to go into the medical field. Dr. Brady took advantage of every opportunity presented to him and in 1977 he graduated cum laude from Harvard University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts. He went on to receive a Master of Public Health from the University of Hawai’i in 1978 and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania in 1982, which is when he began a medical internship at the University of Hawai’i. He completed his medical training in 1985 after completing a residency in internal medicine at the University of Hawai’i. He is also certified as a diplomate by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
In 1985, Dr. Brady began his career as a physician at the Kaiser Permanente Honolulu Medical Office. Then from 1986 to 1989, he served as a physician and medical director of the Kokua Kalihi Valley medical clinic in Honolulu, Hawai’i. During this time, he also served as a clinical instructor at the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa, a position he held until 1999. From 1989 to 1995, he served as a physician at the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center and as a physician and assistant medical director on American Hawai’i Cruises. In 1999, he was promoted to clinical assistant professor at the John A. Burns School of Medicine. He was appointed vice chair of the Department of Native Hawai’ian Health at the John A. Burns School of Medicine in 2003 and served as interim chair from 2009 to 2011. Today, he serves as a physician at the Straub Medical Center of Hawai’i Pacific Health and as an associate professor at the John A. Burns School of Medicine. As an accomplished physician in all of his professional roles, Dr. Brady has made numerous contributions toward the early diagnosis of cancer initiatives.
Outside of his practical appointments in the field, Dr. Brady has also sat on the board of directors of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), and is
the founding chair of the Hawai’i Consortium for Continuing Medical Education at the John A. Burns School of Medicine. He has also extended his expertise in the field as the host of two television series, “Health in Paradise” and “UH on Call,” as a co-host of the “Ask the Doctor” segment on KHON Morning News, and as the editor of the Hawai’i Journal of Medicine and Public Health. Civically, looking to improve native Hawai’ian health disparities, Dr. Brady works closely with the American Heart Association, Inc. and the multicultural initiative in his community. Dr. Brady is also a Commander in the U.S. Merchant Marines and enjoys singing, scuba diving, and listening to music in his spare time.
