
Leveraging over three decades of professional experience, Dr. Steven M. Grimes is regarded as a global expert in physics, astronomy and research. Joining the faculty of Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, in 1978, he served as a visiting professor for one year. Returning to Ohio University in 1985 as a full-time faculty member, he subsequently taught courses in physics and astronomy for the following 22 years as a professor. During this time, Dr. Grimes also served as the director of the university’s Edwards Accelerator Laboratory and conducted significant research before attaining the title of distinguished professor emeritus in 2007.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Grimes was a fellow and staff physicist of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory between 1970 and 1981. To prepare for his career, he pursued a formal education, first earning a Bachelor of Science from Stanford University in 1963. Attending the University of Wisconsin shortly thereafter, he then received a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1964 and 1968, respectively. After receiving his degrees, Dr. Grimes pursued a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Basel in Switzerland, completing his studies in 1969.
Complementing his professional credentials, Dr. Grimes is a prolific editor and author, having contributed several articles to scientific journals. As a noted expert in nuclear physics, he has edited numerous texts, such as “Neutron-Nucleus Collisions” in 1985 and “Moment Methods” in 1979. For his success in both academics and scholarly pursuits, the American Physical Society named him a Distinguished Professor in 2001 and an Outstanding Referee in 2008.
Now recognized as a consultant with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the Los Alamos National Laboratory, Dr. Grimes has been honored several times for his prowess in science and education. Featured in the Athens, Ohio, edition of Forbes magazine in June/July 2023, he was previously spotlighted in the Central edition of The Wall Street Journal on September 2, 2020. Looking toward the future, Dr. Grimes aims to continue enjoying his well-deserved retirement and spend more time enjoying his hobbies, including photography, reading, traveling, hiking with his family and gardening.
