A celebrated figure in the field of economics, Hon. Kenneth A. Guenther has been retired since 2004. Accruing more than 40 years of professional excellence in his industry, he was previously the president and chief executive officer of Independent Community Bankers of America in Washington, D.C., from 2001 to 2004, as well as executive vice president and director of the same corporation from 1985 to 2001. Prior to these appointments, Mr. Guenther served in a variety of roles in Washington, D.C., and abroad, including as a Foreign Service Officer for the Department of State in both Washington, D.C. and Santiago, Chile, between 1960 and 1968, which he considers to be the highlights of his career. He additionally held the position of special assistant to Sen. Jacob Javits from 1969 to 1973.
To prepare for his illustrious career, Mr. Guenther sought out a formal education, earning a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from the University of Rochester in 1957. He followed this accomplishment with postgraduate coursework at such institutions as the School of Advanced International Studies at The Johns Hopkins University, Rangoon Hopkins Center in Burma, and Yale University between 1957 and 1960. He has since maintained affiliations with several professional organizations, including the Independent Community Bankers Association, Social Compact, the Russian-American Bankers Forum, Exchequer Club and the Kenwood Country Club.
A contributor of several articles on the subjects of banking and economics, Mr. Guenther has additionally served in a number of civic engagements with the United States government, including as a member of the Bush-Cheney Transition Advisory Committee with the U.S. Department of the Treasury, a member of the advisory committee on The Golden Dollar with the U.S. Mint, a coordinator of the financial services sector for the Council for Critical Infrastructure Protection and Homeland Security, and a member of the advisory council of the U.S. Small Busine ss Administration.
Attributing his success to Harry J. Brenda, a professor of history at the University of Rochester, Mr. Guenther has been married to Lilly Hoesli since 1964 and has one child and two grandchildren. In his spare time, he enjoys playing golf and tennis, as well as traveling around the world.
