Dr. Nicola Fabbri is an orthopedic surgeon who became involved in his profession to make a difference in the lives of individuals afflicted with cancer. He has been successful because of his hard work and the quality support and training that he has had access to throughout his 30-year career. Since 2012, Dr. Fabbri has excelled as a surgeon at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Concurrently, he has held two academic roles: one as professor of surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine, and the other as associate professor of orthopedic and musculoskeletal pathology at the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute. Among the notable roles Dr. Fabbri previously held are course director of musculoskeletal pathology, attending surgeon, and research fellow at the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute; visiting professor and associate professor in the department of orthopedic surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.; and the Joe Miller visiting professor for the department of orthopedic surgery at McGill University.
Born in the Northern Italian city of Bologna, Dr. Fabbri earned a Doctor of Medicine, summa cum laude, from the University of Bologna in 1988. Following this achievement, he completed a five-year residency in orthopedic surgery through the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute. In 1993, he was certified by the Italian Board of Orthopedics, and later undertook fellowships in adult reconstruction and musculoskeletal oncology — both at the Mayo Clinic — including the Mark B. Coventry Adult Reconstruction Fellowship.
With expertise in a variety of surgical strategies and complex limb-salvage techniques, Dr. Fabbri’s research focuses on the biology and natural history of sarcomas — this is a tumor that occurs in the bones and soft tissues. He designs effective cooperative strategies of treatment and advanced results of surgical management, including limb-reconstructive surgery and amputations.
Dr. Fabbri remains at the top of his field through his continued education and the professional development afforded to him through his experiences as a member of the International Society of Limb Salvage, the Connective Tissue Oncology Society, E.M.S.O.S., The Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons, and the Italian Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology.
A board-certified orthopaedic surgeon in Italy and Europe, Dr. Fabbri was featured in the 29th Edition of Marquis Who’s Who in the World. As he looks ahead to the next phase of his career, Dr. Fabbri plans to continue providing exemplary care as an orthopedic surgeon and professor. In his leisure time, he enjoys golfing, reading, and learning about history.
