Since 2001, James William Barber, DMin, has served as the director of field education and as an assistant professor of practical theology at the Oral Roberts University (ORU) Graduate School of Theology and Missions. A current member of the Dean’s Administrative Team, Dr. Barber’s responsibilities include developing excellent leaders and individuals who are ready to serve dutifully as ministers in the church and in the community. Additionally, Dr. Barber maintains involvement in several church ministries, including Barber Ministries, Inc., which he founded in 2005 and today serves as its president. He is affiliated with the Pastoral-Care Advisory Group (PAG) at Hillcrest Hospital, Compassionate Outreach to East Africa Missions (COTEAM), Because He Lives Ministry, John 3:16 Mission, Paul King Ministries, Crossroads Hospice Charitable Foundation, Ted Estes Ministries, and James Tollett Ministries. Previously, he served as a pastor for Church on the Rock in Texas and Oklahoma, as well as for Victory Christian Center in Tulsa, Okla. He also served as chaplain and director of the Crossroads Hospice of Oklahoma. Notably, Dr. Barber was the first to begin training pastors and educating students in community prac ticum experiences.

Dr. Barber earned a Bachelor of Science in sociology from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He then acquired a Master of Divinity from ORU in 1991 and, ultimately, a Doctor of Ministry in 1997. In 2008, he became a licensed and ordained teacher throug h the World Ministry Fellowship.

Since his entrance into the field of theology, Dr. Barber has received several Outstanding Service Awards from Oral Roberts University (2006, 2010 and 2016). Marquis Who’s Who recognized him with a listing in Who’s Who in America – 65th  Edition. At the moment, Dr. Barber is writing two books: “He Called His Disciples … A Contemporary Voice to the Future Church” and “Jump Culture, For Christ Sake! … Surviving Church in the New Millennium.” He is also collaborating with fellow ORU professor Dr. Thomson Mathew to rewrite “Ministry Between Miracles … Caring for Hurting people in the Power of the Holy Spirit.”
