After several decades as a contributor in the field of education, Plácida Ramos López retired in 2004 as a bilingual teacher for the Alvin Independent School District in Texas. She served in that role for 10 years. Proficient in English and reading, she formerly served the district as a first- and fifth-grade teacher. From 1972 to 1982, Ms. López served as a bilingual teacher for the Pasadena Independent School District. She first rose to prominence within the education sector as a third-grade teacher for Our Lady of Guadalupe School from 1966 to 1973. During her tenure at the school, Ms. López also coached athletes as a volleyball coach. Additionally, from 2005 to 2006, she also served as a bilingual consultant for the Alvin Independent School District.
Ms. López exercises her passion for education through a multitude of affiliations, including the National PTA, National Education Association, HAABE, Alvin Teachers Association and Pasadena Teachers Association. She is also a member of the Classroom Teachers Association, Bay Area Reading Council, the Texas Association for Bilingual Education and TSTA. Furthermore, Ms. López contributes to the National Association for Bilingual Education, Parent Teacher Organization and TRTA. Dedicated to the welfare of her community, she has also contributed to various civic associations, including the Pasadena Independent School District’s Texas Bilingual Textbook Committee. Ms. López has served as a council member for the La Raza Southern Poverty Law Center and as a translator for local community and parish members.
After studying as an undergraduate student at Victoria College from 1964 to 1966 and at OLLU from 1967 to 1968, Ms. López ultimately went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education from Dominican College in 1975. She completed postgraduate coursework at the University of St. Thomas in 1987. One of the biggest highlights of Ms. López’s career was being honored as Teacher of the Year in 1990.
