Since 2013, Cynthia J. Shechter has excelled as the owner, president and director of rehabilitation at ShechterCare, located in New Jersey. In her several roles at her practice, she is well-regarded for treating patients in a patient-centric approach, having focused her medical practice on relevant treatment modalities rather than treating disorders themselves. To this end, Ms. Shechter advocates for listening to her patients, regardless of their concerns, and hearing their worries before she provides treatment.

Earlier in her career, Ms. Shechter served as a marketing manager for Oxford Health Plans and worked at the RUSK Institute at the New York University Medical Center. She also served in a small midtown private practice between 2002 and 2013, through which she thrived as a specialty occupational therapist and director of breast cancer and lymphedema rehabilitation. Prior to embarking on her career, Ms. Shechter received a Bachelor of Arts in clinical sociology from Ithaca College in 1995. During her career, she also earned a Master of Arts in occupational therapy from New York University in 2002. Ms. Shechter holds many certifications, including as a comprehensive oncology rehabilitation expert, certified lymphedema therapist of the upper extremity and an integrative oncology rehabilitation specialist.

Outside of her primary efforts, Ms. Shechter has served as an expert speaker for “Ask the Expert” via the Lymphatic Education & Research Network, an internationally acclaimed organization that fights against lymphatic diseases. In light of her outstanding achievements, she was honored as Advocate of the Year and received the Patient Advocate Award, both from the Lymphatic Education & Research Network, in 2015.

Ms. Shechter is especially proud of her participation with the Academy of Oncology Nurse and Patient Navigators, where she is honored with the responsibility of launching the first New Jersey-based support group. She has been featured in Reuters, as interviewed by Larry Hand, and has been highlighted in several articles. Looking toward the future, she would like to complete a doctorate degree and witness the continued advancement of medicine in the fields of lymphedema and rehabilitation.
