Supported by 45 years of professional excellence, Edward L. Moore Jr. recently retired after serving as an office manager, business manager and the director of human resources with Beth W. Moore, CPA, his wife’s accounting firm. Working with the firm from 2011 until his retirement in 2024, Mr. Moore managed the firm’s business operations, which is recognized as the largest women-owned CPA firm in Virginia.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Moore was a prolific journalist for 35 years, specializing in sports writing and editing. Before transitioning to the role of an accounting office manager, he served as an assistant sports editor for the Daily Press in Newport News, Virginia, for seven years. He also worked as a columnist for the New York Daily News, as an executive sports editor for the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer, and as a sports columnist for the College Sports Lead in the Pensacola Journal. Formerly serving as a general assignment reporter for the Huntsville Times, he commenced his career as a sports editor for the Auburn Plainsman. Throughout his career in journalism, Mr. Moore worked with National Geographic, the Virginia Military Institute, and the United States Army, Navy and Air Force. He was published in such prestigious magazines and newspapers as the LA Times, New York Times, Seattle Times, Dallas Times, Chicago Times and Miami Times.
Civically involved as well, Mr. Moore is currently affiliated with the Speakers Bureau at the Mariners’ Museum in Newport News, which is recognized as the largest maritime museum in the United States. There, he conducts history lectures as a historian for the military and various groups, in which he specializes in the topic of naval warfare. He further lent his expertise to several high schools as a history, rhetoric and literature teacher and basketball coach, including the Calvary Classical School and the Summit Christian Academy. Mr. Moore served on the committee of the Virginia Press Association between 1991 and 1992, was the vice chairperson of the Southeastern region of Associated Press Sports Editors in 1989 and was the director and president of the Georgia Sports Writers Association from 1987 to 1989.
Winning over 90 accolades for his work in journalism, Mr. Moore draws upon a Bachelor of Arts in journalism, which he earned at Auburn University in 1982. He also received a certificate in military strategy and policy from Old Dominion University and a Virginia State teaching certificate in English from Virginia Wesleyan University.
In accounting for his success, Mr. Moore credits the influence of his parents and his education while he was coming of age. To wit, his mentor was Jack Simms, a sports editor for the Associated Press in New York City. Looking forward, Mr. Moore aims to continue enjoying his well-deserved retirement and begin traveling.
