Having accrued over two decades of professional experience as a teacher, Anita Skop is recognized as a retired senior advisor to the deputy chancellor for the New York City Department of Education, where she served between 2022 and 2023. In her position as a senior advisor, she was responsible for supporting the school superintendents, as well as advising in literary and labor relations for the Department of Education.
Earlier in her career, Ms. Skop served as a community superintendent for the New York Department of Education’s District 15 in Brooklyn between 2009 and 2022. During this time, she supervised approximately 37 schools and over 25,000 students across pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Prior to this appointment, she was a lead senior achievement facilitator for the New York Department of Education in Ozone Park from 2007 to 2009. Likewise, she was a faculty member at Touro University for over 20 years.
To prepare for her career, Ms. Skop pursued formal education at Brooklyn College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English, with a minor in education, in 1985. She later received an advanced certification in administration from Brooklyn College in 1999. Punctuating these credentials, Ms. Skop obtained a Master of Education in special education from Adelphi University in 1993. As a testament to her astounding achievements in the field, she has also accrued several accolades, most recently including being named to the Power Women List in 2022. The same year, she earned the Educators for Student Success Educational Leadership Award.
Likewise, Ms. Skop was bestowed with the Shirley Chisholm Award in 2018, the Distinguished Educator Award in 2002 and the Reliance Award for Excellence in Education in 1993. Furthermore, she was named New York State Teacher of the Year in 1994, having also been named an Outstanding Educator by the United Federation of Teachers the same year, among many other accolades. Outside of her primary endeavors, Ms. Skop has served as a scout leader for the Girl Scouts of the United States of America, taught theater at a local summer camp and was a camp director at a hotel in the Catskills, New York.
