Spending his childhood summers at his grandfather’s dairy farm, Donald R. Kimball soon decided that he wanted to enter the dairy industry. Earning a Bachelor of Science in agriculture, dairy production and biochemistry from Purdue University in 1960, he subsequently commenced his career in 1962 as a public health sanitarian within the Division of Dairy Products for the Indiana Board of Health. He was promoted to milk sanitation rating officer in 1966, a role he held for nearly a decade, before becoming the chief milk sanitation rating officer in 1973. Appointed as director in 1975, he served the Indiana Board of Health until ending his tenure with the company in 1987.
Mr. Kimball joined Dean Foods Co. in Rockford, Illinois, in 1987, where he served as the director of regulatory affairs for 13 years until his retirement in 2000. During this time, he was also the director of farm relations between 1990 and 1998. Throughout his illustrious career, he is proudest of helping to eliminate the use of antibiotics in milk in the State of Indiana, as well as eliminating polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) from the milk supply.
A registered professional sanitarian since 1965, Mr. Kimball is a former captain of the U.S. Army and has contributed his range of expertise to several creative works, including the article “Raw Milk” in the Journal of the Indiana State Medical Association in 1982 and “Regulations in Milk Quality Control” in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association in 1977.
To remain abreast of development in the dairy industry, Mr. Kimball has maintained affiliation with several organizations over the years, including the International Association for Food Protection, the Association of Food and Drug Officials, the Dairy Practices Council, the Illinois Food Safety Task Force, the Indiana Public Health Association and the Northeast Dairy Practices Council, among other organizations. Formerly involved with the National Conference for Interstate Milk Shipments, he served the conference on their single service containers committee, drug residue program review committee and methods for making ratings committee.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Mr. Kimball was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Midwest Dairy Products Association in 1988. Notably, he earned the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019.
