Board certified in addiction psychiatry, Dr. Edward M. Paul is a distinguished psychiatrist and educator with 33 years of experience to his credit. Specializing in mental illness and chemical dependency, he was certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in 1987 after completing a fellowship in substance abuse disorders through NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. He became certified in level one and level two training in internal family systems therapy in 2016 and 2017, respectively, as well as in addiction, eating disorders, and deepening and expanding. Striving to extend knowledge on the nature of addiction, Dr. Paul enjoys helping his patients through effective treatment and providing them with the necessary tools to identify, avert and cope with behavioral patterns associated with addiction.

Since 2008, Dr. Paul has been a noted lecturer in his field. An expert in addiction psychiatry in the City of New York and Nassau County, New York, since 2003, he formerly served in a private practice in the alcoholism unit of Bellevue Hospital Center from 1986 to 2008. During this time, he also served as a clinical associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry at New York University’s Langone Medical Center between 1991 and 2008, where he supervised addiction fellows. Alongside his primary career responsibilities, Dr. Paul has volunteered with the Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine, the American Cancer Society and the Ronald McDonald House. He is also a supporter of the Environmental Defense Fund, the National Wildlife Federation, the Sierra Club, the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, Meals on Wheels and CARE, among others.

Dr. Paul has accrued numerous accolades and honors since the inception of his career. A featured listee in Top Doctors by New York Media LLC from 1999 to 2000 and since 2002, he recently was honored in the Top 1% of America’s Most Honored Professionals in 2017 and received a Compassionate Doctor Award and On-Time Physician Award in 2016. The same year, he was recognized among the Top 10% of America’s Most Honored Businesses and Top 1% Percent of America’s Most Honored Professionals.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Paul was a featured listee in New York Metropolitan Area’s Top Doctors from 1999 to 2006 and again from 2010 to 2012, as well as in 2008 and 2016. From 2012 to 2013, he was featured in Top Doctors by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., having also earned two Patients’ Choice Awards in 2009 and 2010. Notably, he was named one of Vitals’ Top 10 Doctors by State and U.S. News & World Report’s Top 50 Addiction Psychiatrists.

Married with two children, Dr. Paul currently resides in New York. He enjoys swing dancing and writing in his spare time. Impressively, he was listed in the 64th through 71st editions of Who’s Who in America between 2009 and 2018.
