A native of Ontario, Canada, Derek Armand Smith holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Toronto. He is also a chartered professional accountant and a chartered global management accountant in Ontario, Canada, and a certified public accountant in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Mr. Smith began his accounting career as a staff accountant in the Office of the Auditor General in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Then, from 1978 to 1979, he briefly served as a chartered accountant at Peat Marwick Thorne in Canada. From 1979 to 1981, he was appointed vice president of finance and  Administration at the Canada Dry Bottling Company Ltd.

After this, Mr. Smith relocated to the United States, and from 1981 to 1982, he served as the supervising senior at Peat Marwick as well as the manager of corporate reporting at Warren, Gorham & Lamont, Inc. in Boston, MA. From 1982 to 1984, he stepped into the role of assistant controller at Warren, Gorham & Lamont in New York. From 1988 to 1990, he moved on to become the senior vice president and chief financial officer. In 1990, he joined Penguin Books USA, where he served in the same positions as well as executive vice president until 1996. From 1996 to 1998, he was the vice president and chief financial officer of Addison Wesley Longman Inc. in Reading, MA. From 1998 to 2000, he served as vice president and chief administrative officer of Organizational Dynamics Inc. in Burlington, MA. From 2000 to 2002, he served as the chief financial officer of First Knowledge Partners Inc. From 2002 to 2010, he served as chief financial officer, and was promoted from vice president of administration to executive vice president at Castel Inc. in Beverly, MA. From 2012 to 2014, he served as the managing director of Next Stage Solutions Inc. in Lexington, MA. From 2014 to 2016, he served as chief financial officer and chief operating officer of MMIS Inc. in Portsmouth, NH. Since 2010, Mr. Smith has been the managing director of DAS Financial Management Advisory Services, LLC.

Civically, Mr. Smith has been active in his field as the trustee of the John Hart Hunter Educational Foundation Inc. in New York, NY. He also served on the Audit & Financial Committee of the Essex County Community  Foundation in Danvers, MA. In his spare time outside of work, Mr. Smith enjoys skiing, sailing, and playing tennis, paddle tennis, and golf.
