Born in Berkeley, CA, Dean T. Mason, MD is a seasoned cardiologist with a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry and a Doctor of Medicine, both from Duke University. He went on to prepare for his career in medicine as a medical intern at the Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1958 to 1959. He then served as a medical resident at the Duke University Medical Center from 1959 to 1960 and at the Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1960 to 1961. Dr. Mason is a diplomate certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American Board of Cardiovascular Diseases, and the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Mason’s prolific career spans nearly 60 years of service in cardiology. He began his career in 1961 as the senior assistant surgeon and clinical associate in the cardiology branch at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health. At the institute, he went on to become a senior investigator in the cardiology branch, an attending physician, and the assistant director of the section of cardiovascular diagnosis. In 1968, Dr. Mason joined the UC Davis Medical Center as the chief of cardiovascular medicine and professor of  physiology and medicine. Then, from 1982 to 1983, he briefly served as director of the cardiac center at Cedars Medical Center in Miami, FL. In 1983, he moved on to St. Mary’s Medical Center as physicianin-chief and later as chairman of the department of cardiovascular medicine. In 2000, Dr. Mason was appointed to the honorary medical staff of St. Mary’s Medical Center.

Throughout his career, Dr. Mason has also served as a visiting professor at several universities, a field consultant, and sat on various professional boards. He is a member of the Life Sciences Committee of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, has served as co-chairman of cardiovascularrenal drugs for the United States Pharmacopeia Committee Revision, and was named an honorary professor of medicine at the Peking University Health Science Center. In addition, Dr. Mason has offered his expertise as a contributor of more than 1000 publications to various medical journals and books. From 1980 to 1996 he served as editor-in-chief of the American Heart Journal; and in 1981, he was the first cardiologist to publish a symposium on coronary thrombolysis for patients with myocardial infarction. As a seasoned and accomplished professional, Dr. Mason was recognized by Marquis  Who’s Who in 2017 as a Distinguished Humanitarian and an Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achiever.
