Born to Sylvester Oty and Edna Claire Claiborne, C. Clair Claiborne, PhD initially wanted to be a chemist and began his career in 1973 as a chemotechnician with Süd-Chemie A.G. in Moosburg, Germany. After serving in that position for two years, Dr. Claiborne decided to study to become a material scientist. With a Bachelor of Art in chemistry from the University of Kansas and specializing in electrical transformers, he served as an engineer at Janes Manufacturing Inc., a research assistant at Northwestern University, and a research chemist at Phillips Petroleum. In 1984, after obtaining a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from Northwestern University, he became a senior scientist at Westinghouse Electric (now ABB Power T&D Company Inc.), where he went on to advance through several positions for more than 30 years.

In 2017, Dr. Claiborne established Claiborne Consulting LLC, where he continues to provide consulting services in his field. As an accomplished scientist, Dr. Claiborne holds more than 10 U.S. patents and four European patents, including an invention called Biotemp with Dr. T.V. Oommen. Dr. Claiborne has also contributed to more than 75 articles and professionals, and he is the author of two industry texts, “Working with Metals” and “Working with Non-Metals,” both published in 1981.
