Richard David Krugman, MD, is a respected and knowledgeable physician and educator who has collected nearly five decades of professional experience in the health care industry. Since 1988, he has served as a distinguished professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, having also spent time as the vice chancellor of health affairs at the university (2007-2015) and dean of the School of Medicine (1990-2015). Prior to these appointments, he was an associate professor and assistant professor at the university between 1973 and 1987. He commenced his career as a staff associate at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, from 1971 to 1973.

To prepare for his illustrious career, Dr. Krugman received a Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University in 1963. He subsequently earned a Doctor of Medicine from New York University in 1968. After completing an internship in pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine from 1968 to 1969, he was a resident at the university from 1968 to 1971. Soon thereafter, he became a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics.

A prolific author, Dr. Krugman has contributed to numerous handbooks throughout his tenure and is the author of the fifth edition of “The Battered Child” (1997). Likewise, he served on the editorial board of Academic Medicine between 1994 and 1999. Moreover, he was a longstanding editor of Child Abuse & Neglect (1987-2001).

Dr. Krugman is a past president of The National Foundation to End Child Abuse and Neglect, a professional organization dedicated to alter the perception of child abuse and neglect as social and legal problems to also being mental health and public health problems that can be treated. Working with other organizations to expand funding for research, training and prevention, the foundation uses its public awareness campaign to assist parents and professionals to collectively end child abuse and neglect in local communities. Dr. Krugman currently serves as the board chair of the organization.

Alongside his work with the foundation, Dr. Krugman affiliates with the American Medical Society, the Colorado Medical Society, the American Pediatric Society, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Professional Society on the Abuse of Children, among others. In recognition of his exceptional contributions to health care, he was awarded honorary doctorates from Odessa State Medical University in the Ukraine and Wake Forest University in 2005 and 2009, respectively.
