John Coryell Hilke, Ph.D., is a venerated professional economist who has amassed more than four decades of professional experience in the industry. Most recently serving as a Federal Trade Commissioner/U.S. Aid to the Technical Assistance Mission to the Anti-Monopoly Committee of Ukraine with the Office of International Affairs from 2016 to 2018, he formerly acted as a longstanding independent economic consultant with the Federal Trade Commission at the Bureau of Economics in Washington, D.C., from 2005 to 2016, and with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development from 2005 to 2010. Prior to these positions, he was employed with the Federal Trade Commission at the Bureau of Economics in a multitude of capacities, including as an electricity project coordinator, assistant to the director and a staff economist. He commenced his career as a visiting lecturer at Cornell Unive rsity in 1977.
Alongside his primary endeavors, Dr. Hilke has been a consultant with the Federal Trade Commission since 2005 and the United States Department of Justice in 1988. He was formerly a consultant with the Jamaica Fair Trade Commission from 2006 to 2008 and the Mexico Federal Competition Commission from 2008 to 2009. Likewise, he was an expert witness for the Federal Trade Commission between 1980 and 2012. Equally passionate about his community, Dr. Hilke was chairman of the board of trustees at Cedar Lane Unitarian Church from 1988 to 1990 and co-president of the Cheverly Area Schools PTA from 1985 to 1987. In addition, he was president of the Unitarian Universalist Affordable Housing Corporation from 1996 to 1997 and co-president of the board of trustees of the South Valley Unitarian Universalist Society from 2006 to 2008. He remains a member of board of trustees at the Woodinville Unitarian Universalist Church and secretary of the Northwest Unitarian Universalist Justice Network Board of Directors.
Dr. Hilke has contributed several articles to professional journals and is the author of more than 85 competition advocacy filings of the Federal Trade Commission and its staff regarding electricity industry restructuring. Married to Deborah Durkee Smith since 1973, he is the proud father of two children, James and Anne Catherine, and four grandchildren. In his spare time, he enjoys hiking, reading science fiction novels and traveling. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Swarthmore College, as well as a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from Cornell University.
