A partner with Thompson Painter Law,
P.C., since 2015, James W. Thompson
has accrued nearly 60 years of professional
experience in the legal industry. As an estate
planning attorney, Mr. Thompson specializes
in wills, trusts, and estates throughout the
Billings, Mont., area. An expert in his field,
he is renowned for his wealth of knowledge
regarding legal policy and his ability to use his
experience to suit each of his clients’ needs.

In preparation for his career, Mr. Thompson first
obtained a Bachelor of Science in accounting
from the University of Montana in 1958,
followed by a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the
University of Montana Law School in 1962. He
has been admitted to practice law in the state of
Montana, as well as before the U.S. Tax Court.

Alongside his professional endeavors, Mr.
Thompson remains a loyal member of his
community through his participation in civic
duties, including his role as president with
Our Montana, Inc. since 2000; on the board of
directors of Our Montana, Inc. since 1997; and
on the board of trustees for District 7 Human
Resources Development Council since 1975.
In addition, he was a former member of the
board of directors of the Yellowstone Area Bar
Association from 1983 to 1987, president of the
Yellowstone Area Bar Association from 1985
to 1986, and president of the Billings Alumni
Association of Sigma Chi from 1963 to 1965.
He remains affiliated with the American Bar
Association, the American Academy of Estate
Planning Attorneys and the National Academy
of Elder Law Attorneys.
