An expert in photochemistry and DNA chemistry, Robert Marshall Wilson, Ph.D., is a distinguished research professor at Bowling Green State University’s (BGSU) Center for Photochemical Sciences. Backed by more than 55 years of professional experience, Dr. Wilson has had the pleasure of working alongside one of the most preeminent chemists of all time, R.B. Woodward. An accomplished member in his industry, Dr. Wilson is the recipient of the 1998 Rieveschl Award for Distinguished Scientific Research and the Distinguished Scientist of the Year Award from the Technical Societies Council of Cincinnati (1991). In 2005, he was bestowed with the Hans H. Jaffe Award for Distinguished Scholarship through the Department of Chemistry at the University of Cincinnati (UC). Dr. Wilson has served in his current position since 2005. His association with BGSU dates back to 1987, when he joined the school as an adjunct professor. In 2013, he was granted the privilege of being the interim director of the Center for Photochemical Sciences.
After receiving a Bachelor of Science from Pennsylvania State University in 1961, Dr. Wilson obtained a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1965. He initially worked as a chemical engineer at Penn State but decided to focus his efforts toward a career in academia. Thus, Dr. Wilson subsequently joined the faculty at the University of Cincinnati, where he began applying lasers to chemistry. Over the course of his career, Dr. Wilson held highly touted positions at UC. Among the notable posts he held
were assistant professor of chemistry, head of the Department of Chemistry, distinguished research professor, and professor emeritus. Furthermore, he has taught at The Ohio State University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg in Germany.
Dr. Wilson has exercised his passion for the sciences through a multitude of professional memberships. In addition to being a fellow of the UC Graduate School, he has been affiliated with the American Chemical Society, The New York Academy of Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society. Previously, Dr. Wilson was co-organizer of the American Chemical Society’s Luminating Molecules Symposium. He organized meetings for the Ohio Photochemistry Society and the Inter-American Photochemical Society’s Awards Committee, and served as the session leader for Connecticut College’s Gordon Conference on Organic Photochemistry.
An expert in the field of chemistry, Dr. Wilson has written, co-authored and contributed to a bevy of publications. As a testament to his significant contributions to his industry, Dr. Wilson was listed in the fourth edition of Marquis Who’s Who in Science and Engineering.
