Fischman, Myrna 2132049_51905 Newsletter

Over the last 57 years, Myrna Leah Fischman has established herself as a thought leader and aspirational administrator in many disciplines of the financial world. A Certified Public Accountant in the state of New York since 1964, Dr. Fischman currently serves Long Island University (LIU) in a variety of roles. Her duties include serving as director of the university’s Center for Accounting & Tax Education, director of LIU Brooklyn’s School of Professional Accountancy, and professor of accounting taxation and law. Dr. Fischman has represented LIU since 1970, when she was first hired as an adviser and professor, and her contributions have been aplenty: founding the Center for Accounting and Tax Education; developing a 150-hour BS/MS accounting program for LIU Brooklyn, which is approved by the New York State Education Department, in preparation for the CPA exam; assisting the C.W. Post and Southampton campuses in developing their 150-hour BS/MS accounting program; and introducing the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) IRS program to LIU Brooklyn.

Dr. Fischman’s tremendous success has come from a desire to always look for the next opportunity and by putting her full effort into each project she is working on. She holds a Bachelor of Science from the City University of New York (CUNY), which she earned in 1960. She has since obtained a master’s degree from CUNY and a Ph.D. from New York University. Upon completing her undergraduate studies, she taught accounting at Center Commercial High School (CCHS) in Manhattan. In 1963, she joined the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) as an instructor; she worked simultaneously for BMCC and CCHS until 1966. Dr. Fischman’s career took a major step forward in 1969, when she was hired by the Queens District Attorney’s Office as chief accountant and investigator of rackets. She worked there until 1971, holding the position of community fellowship coordinator before leaving the Queens DA’s Office.

As she progressed in her career and established her reputation of excellence, Dr. Fischman complemented her accounting expertise through memberships with professional organizations. She has been a prominent figure within the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants since the 1980s, serving on its board of directors, New York Chapter board, public relations committee, general committee on education in colleges and universities, auditing committee, and committee on recruitment for CPA careers. The Society acknowledged Dr. Fischman’s effort by bestowing upon her the Dr. Emanuel Saxe Outstanding CPA in Education Award for 1994 to 1995. Additionally, Dr. Fischman is presently affiliated with the Federal Credit Union, American Accounting Society, Association of Government Accountants, and the Institute of Management Accountants.

In recognition of her contributions to her field, Dr. Fischman was cited in articles published by the CPA Journal, which is published by the New York State Society of CPAs. Her accolades include a 2014 Department of the Treasury Award from the IRS, a Special Director’s Award in Recognition of 40 Years of Service in the Volunteers in Technical Service Program, a Lifetime Achievement Award from Soroptimist International, and a 1969 Meritorious Service Award from the Community Service Society.
