Mary Powell Johnson has spent over four decades as prominent figure in the arts. During her illustrious career, she has reviewed theater, opera, ballet, and occasionally profiled exhibiting gallery artists. Although retired, she continues to provide insight for the Baltimore Sun in Anne Arundel County as an arts reviewer, a role she has held for 20 years. Ms. Johnson also covered the arts including concerts and theater for the Severna Park Voice in Maryland for 11 years, in addition to being an arts writer for several Patch publications in Ann Arundel County.
Ms. Johnson was an honors student at Johns Hopkins University, where earlier in career she had served as the associate director of Centennial Planning and Programs. In recognition of her accomplishments, Ms. Johnson was named a 2017 Who’s Who Lifetime Achiever and is featured in numerous editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who of American Women, and Who’s Who in the World. She was also nominated for the Annie Award in Literary Arts by the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County. She credits some of her success to Joel Markowitz who has been an inspiration throughout her career. He is the founder of DCMetroTheaterArts, a website that covers more local performing arts than any other media outlet.
Ms. Johnson is a strong advocate for the resident companies of Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis and for the performing arts companies of Anne Arundel Community College.
