Inspired to emulate the teachers who educated her during her days a student, Matilee Howard Johnson pursued a profession in the education sector soon after completing her undergraduate curriculum at the University of Georgia. Early in her career, Ms. Johnson taught at the Everglades School for Girls in Miami, Fla., and at The Hamlin School in San Francisco, Calif. In 1961, she joined Westminster Girls’ School in Atlanta as the dean of students. Before her retirement, Ms. Johnson obtained a Master of Arts in Administration from Georgia State University and furthered her professional status by serving as headmistress of Westminster Girls’ School, a post she held from 1972 to 1977.
A native of Palmetto, Ga., Ms. Johnson undertook postgraduate courses at Colgate University, Emory University and Oxford University. She served as a substitute teacher at the Dana Hall School in Wellesley, Mass., and as an educational consultant at the Pingry School and the Kent Place School, both located in Elizabeth, N.J. In addition to her teaching experience, Ms. Johnson was a conference chairman for the Mid-South Association Independent School Business Officers Association in Atlanta, and she currently volunteers at the Disney Family Museum and the Presidio of San Francisco.
In recognition of her professional success, Ms. Johnson has been featured in Marquis Who’s Who publications such as Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who of American Women. No longer active in the classroom, Ms. Johnson now spends her time swimming, skiing, and creating jewelry and flower arrangements.
