Wanebo, Harold 2158591_26472027 NewsletterDr. Harold J. Wanebo is a noteworthy educator and surgeon, who has amassed more than 50 years of experience within the field of medicine. Focusing his practice on surgical oncology, he has worked with numerous investigators over the years to better understand the pathways most associated with metastases. Ultimately, this will assist physicians in developing better therapies for cancer treatment. He also holds research interests in hepatobiliary surgery, colorectal surgery, and gastrointestinal cancer management and pelvic malignancy surgery. Over the course of his career, he has delivered over 500 presentations and authored 290 peer-reviewed journal articles.

A professor emeritus of the Boston University School of Medicine, Dr. Wanebo has also served as the director of surgical oncology at Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket, Rhode Island; a professor of surgery and director of surgical oncology at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island; and the founder of Chemo Enhanced. In previous years, he was a consultant for clinical immunology service, associate scientist, assistant attending surgeon, associate and clinical assistant at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Additionally, he is a past professor of surgery and chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, and assistant professor of surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine at Cornell University, where he previously served as an instructor of surgery in the early 1970s.

Obtaining a medical degree from the University of Colorado Boulder, Dr. Wanebo has served as an editor of several papers including “Regional Therapy of Malignancy” in 2008, “Surgical Management for Pelvic Malignancy” in 2005, “Surgery for Gastrointestinal Cancer” in 1996 and “Colorectal Cancer” in 1993, among others. A frequent contributor to the Journal of Cancer Education between 1988 and 1992, he has also been an editorial board member of Head and Neck and the Annals of Surgical Oncology. He is a former consultant for the ad hoc section of allergy and infectious diseases at the National Institutes of Health, and was an endowed chair of the Harold Wanebo professorship of surgical oncology at the Rodger Williams Medical Center in Providence.

Dr. Wanebo served to the rank of major in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971, where he served in Vietnam. As a result of his service, he earned a Commendation Medal with Device and a Bronze Star Medal. Affiliated with several professional organizations such as the American College of Surgeons, where he is a fellow, he has also earned the Junior Faculty Clinical Fellowship Award from the American Cancer Society from 1974 to 1977 and a Special Award from the University of Colorado Medical School in 2007.
