When she was a child, Dr. Agnes Veronica Szekeres was exposed to the lifestyle of diabetics and complications of diabetes. Watching her father inject insulin, she was inspired to read medical books, particularly within the area of endocrinology. After deciding she wanted to become a researcher in medicine, she was driven by the desire to find a cure for diabetes. After pursuing the field, she delved into helping families cope with diabetes, ultimately developing a passion for establishing personal connections with her patients and treating them with the utmost care.
At the inception of her career in 1970 – after earning a medical degree from the University at Buffalo – Dr. Szekeres completed an internship at Buffalo General Hospital in 1972 and went on to serve as a resident in internal medicine at the Orange County Medical Center until 1973. Hired by the Kaiser Permanente Medical Group in Bellflower, California, that same year, she served as a staff member until 1980. Taking a hiatus to focus further on her medical training, she completed a fellowship in endocrinology at the University of California Medical Center in 1982 before returning to Kaiser Permanente, where she served as an endocrinologist until her retirement in 2006.
Drawing upon 36 years in the field, Dr. Szekeres is proudest of organizing an osteoporosis group at Kaiser Permanente during her tenure. Although in retirement, she has continued to volunteer as an attending staff member at the University of California Medical Center since 1974. Equally passionate about the arts and her local community, she has further contributed as a volunteer at the Orange County Philharmonic Society.
In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. Szekeres was selected for inclusion in the 19th edition of Who’s Who of American Women in 1995. In her leisure time, she enjoys listening to the symphony, attending the theater, ballroom dancing, canoeing and hiking, and playing bridge.
