Possessing a desire to help others through law, Eric A. Manterfield is a retired lawyer and law educator who accrued 40 years in the field. Commencing his career after receiving a juris doctorate in 1972, he first served Barnes, Hickam, Pantzer & Boyd (now Barnes & Thornburg) as an associate for two years before starting his tenure at the American Fletcher National Bank in 1975. First serving as a trust officer for one year, he was promoted to manager of the probate department, where he remained for six years. From there, he became the manager of the Personal Trust Division until his departure from the bank in 1986.
During his career at the American Fletcher National Bank, Mr. Manterfield served as an adjunct professor of law at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law from 1977 to 2003. Likewise, he was an esteemed partner of Krieg DeVault LLP from 1996 until his retirement from the industry in 2012. Civically involved as well, he served such facilities and organizations as the Easterseals Crossroads Rehabilitation Center, the American Heart Association, the Festival Music Society, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and Indiana Landmarks, where he has been a docent since 2015.
Most proud of being named a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, the highest professional recognition that a lawyer can receive, Mr. Manterfield also thoroughly enjoyed being a speaker across the nation and published writer. He has contributed a number of articles to legal journals throughout his career, as well as numerous books. Authoring “Estate Planning for Married Couples” in 1982, he also wrote “Fundamentals of Estate Planning” and “Basic Estate Planning.” Notably, he contributed to the fourth edition of “Critical Elements of Estate Planning with Forms” in 2009. In light of his excellence in writing, one of his professional articles was named Best Article by the Library of Congress.
As a testament to his success, Mr. Manterfield was recognized by the Indianapolis Bar Association for excellence in estate planning in 2006. He also earned the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019.
