Barbara Pierce was initially inspired to enter the field of education by her relatives, who were also teachers. Moving around often as a child, she and her family eventually settled in Westchester County, NY, where she received an excellent education. After working for 2 1/2 years, she saved up enough money to attend college, discovering at that time that she desired to write for a living. Attending Cheyney State College (now known as Cheyney University of Pennsylvania), she received a Bachelor of Science in education. Soon thereafter, she received a Master of Science in education and reading from the College of New Rochelle. From there, Ms. Pierce commenced her career as a prominent educator.

Beginning in 1968, Ms. Pierce served as an elementary school teacher for the Mount Vernon City School District. Remaining with the school district for the length of her career, she eventually retired in 2003 after accruing 35 fruitful years in the field. Even after retirement, she continued to serve as a substitute teacher. When asked about her career highlights, she cites educating children as the most important aspect of her career. She hopes that she was a beacon of light for them and a source of inspiration for them to pursue their own professional and personal goals. She especially loved helping poor children, having grown up in a struggling environment herself. In addition, Ms. Pierce credits her faith in God for her success.

In recognition of her prominence in the industry, Ms. Pierce received the Jenkins Award from the Parent Teacher Association of Mount Vernon. Since departing from her role as a teacher, she has written 13 books, which she considers to be her legacy. Looking toward the future, Ms. Pierce intends to continue practicing her faith and writing books.
