Drawing upon more than 50 years of practiced experience in ophthalmology, pharmacology and academia, Annette Beyer-Mears, PhD, is a passionate medical researcher and educator who has dedicated her life to her fields of study. Most recently serving as an associate professor in the department of ophthalmology at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey from 1986 until her retirement in 2014, she previously served the university as an associate professor, assistant professor, and teaching assistant in the department of physiology, as well as an assistant professor and National Institutes of Health fellow in the department of ophthalmology. She commenced her career as an instructor of physiology at the Springside Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia, PA, in 1967, holding the position for four years. Alongside her primary endeavors, Dr. Beyer-Mears was a visiting associate professor in the department of ophthalmology and vision science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for nearly two decades.
To prepare for her career, Dr. Beyer-Mears pursued a formal education at Vassar College, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in 1963. Subsequently, she completed a National Institutes of Health fellowship through Weill Cornell Medicine at Cornell University between 1963 and 1965. Thereafter, she attended Fairleigh Dickinson University, obtaining a Master of Science in 1973. Concluding her education in 1977, she earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
As a testament to her success, Dr. Beyer-Mears has garnered multiple accolades. Most recently, she was the recipient of the Wright Spirit Award from the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy in 2007. In addition, she received numerous grants from such prestigious companies and organizations as Pfizer Inc., the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health. Earlier in her career, the Foundation for the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey honored her with a Research Award, and the National Institutes of Health gave her several National Research Service Awards.
