Supported by over 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Matthew B. Smith is a leader in the field of psychiatry. After graduating from Walt Whitman High School in the late 1960s, he attended Haverford College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English and philosophy. Concurrently taking coursework in theater at Sarah Lawrence College during his undergraduate studies, he subsequently did premedical work at Columbia University. He then went on to receive a Doctor of Medicine from New York University. He completed an internship and residency in psychiatry, followed by a fellowship in academic psychiatry, all at the Grossman School of Medicine at New York University. He obtained his board certification in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
Upon graduating with his medical degree, Dr. Smith joined the faculty of the New York University Medical Center, where he served as a psychiatrist between 1977 and 2010. This included working as an attending psychiatrist at Bellevue Hospital in New York City from 1987 to 1989. Over the course of his prolific career, Dr. Smith authored and published papers in psychiatric journals and chapters in psychiatric textbooks.
Dr. Smith was affiliated with several organizations, including the American Psychiatric Association and the American Psychotherapy Association. Additionally, he has been a member of the American Pain Society, the American Academy of Pain Medicine and the National Registry of Certified Group Psychotherapists. Dr. Smith has also been board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc.
Attributing much of his success to the influence of his mentors, including his father, who was a professional government diplomat, Dr. Smith participated in several research projects over the decades. Looking toward the future, Dr. Smith intends to continue writing on a creative basis and wishes to publish his poetic works.
