
Motivated to give back to his community, Michael A. Cervantes pursued a career in education, leveraging his passion for teaching. Now retired, he most recently served as an elementary school teacher in the El Rancho Unified School District in California. Beginning his service at the district in 1976, Mr. Cervantes fulfilled various roles, including kindergarten teacher, first through fifth grade teacher, Spanish as a second language instructor in the Gifted and Talented Education Program, and district chair. He also founded the district’s bilingual/bicultural program. Earlier in his professional career, Mr. Cervantes served in the Valle Lindo School District as a bilingual educator and third- and fifth-grade teacher from 1972 to 1976.
Mr. Cervantes holds various positions within his community, including serving as a newsletter editor for the San Gabriel Historical Association since 2025, an organization with which he has been affiliated for over two decades. Since 1991, Mr. Cervantes has also served as vice president of the El Rancho Federation of Teachers, and since 1990, he has been a consultant to the Planning Task Force at the El Rancho Unified School District. Notably, he previously served as the acting president and is currently recognized as the president of the San Gabriel Veterans Memorial Coalition, in addition to having been a co-coordinator for the Liturgical Ministry of Eucharistic Ministers since 2024.
Mr. Cervantes holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Master of Arts in education from California State College. In 1985, he earned a Master of Arts in Chicano studies from California State University, Los Angeles. To give back to his alma mater, he mentors students through the California State University Alumni Association, focusing on education, literature and Chicano studies. He is a certified elementary school teacher and bilingual specialist in California, and he was honored with the Alumni Recognition Award from San Gabriel Mission High School in 2019. Furthermore, he has received numerous grants in his field.
Having sponsored several high school and college scholarships, Mr. Cervantes awarded a scholarship in 2025 in honor of his sister, Maria Dolores Cervantes. Additionally, he has sponsored students at his high school, San Gabriel Mission High School, helping cover part of their tuition and motivating them to complete their studies and succeed. Mr. Cervantes stresses that his accomplishments would not have been possible without the support of his family and colleagues, who have all served as guiding lights throughout his career. Looking ahead, he plans to continue relishing his retirement and dedicating resources to support students entering the education sector.
