Leveraging more than 18 years of professional excellence, Sophie Moody Conteh is well-regarded for her expertise in agriculture and strategic planning on an international scale. Working with the United Nations Development Programme since 2009, she has excelled as a regional programme specialist with the Country Oversight and Support Team since 2022. In her multifaceted role, Ms. Conteh maintains responsibility for addressing the support and capacity-building requirements of three countries: Ghana, South Togo and Cameroon. In addition to her routine tasks, she coordinates with different departments within the United Nations Development Programme to ensure the development of country programs that run for a duration of three to five years, as well as provides quality assurance to the implementation of evaluations that aid in articulating future programs. Throughout her tenure, Ms. Conteh has taken great care to ensure that each program adheres to the necessary processes, policies and tools to ensure the successful implementation and continuation of all the country’s programs.

Earlier in her career, Ms. Conteh served with the United Nations Development Programme’s Regional Service Center as an evaluation specialist between 2015 and 2022. Prior to this appointment, she was a monitoring and evaluation specialist from 2012 to 2015 and a result-based management specialist from 2009 to 2012, both with the United Nations Development Programme. Ms. Conteh commenced her career in 2005, whereupon she was recognized as a programme officer for the Development Assistance Coordination Office for three years. She also worked extensively for World Vision, where she was responsible for introducing locally appropriate technology and resources to three chiefdoms.

To prepare for her career, Ms. Conteh pursued a formal education at Njala University College, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in agriculture in 1994. Her initial foray into the field began with her father’s Money Women’s Project, a program in which her father supported women agriculturalists. Influencing Ms. Conteh to study agriculture, she worked with her father to assist the women, providing advice on when to grow crops and related information to ensure success. During this time, she realized that she desired to make a genuine impact on others’ lives and shifted her focus from agriculture to monitoring and evaluation. In 2003, she received a Master of Science in sustainable rural development from the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester.

Among the many milestones of her career, Ms. Conteh is particularly proud of serving as a monitoring specialist during her tenure in Zimbabwe, where she devised a monitoring and evaluation strategy that ensured the implementation of effective mechanisms to improve a satisfactory management audit. During this time, she was instrumental in scrutinizing the country’s systems and determining their adherence to corporate policies and procedures. Likewise, Ms. Conteh enjoyed developing various protocols, metrics and theories of change while working at the Regional Service Center of the United Nations Development Programme in Africa, which created a standard operating procedure.
