Supported by more than 40 years of professional excellence, Dr. Raymond L. Smith is well-regarded in the fields of medicine and academia for his prowess in plastic surgery and wound care. Since 2022, he has served as an assistant professor of surgery in the Tower Health Division of the Drexel University School of Medicine. Concurrently, Dr. Smith is the division chief of the Hyperbaric Center and Wound Care of Tower Health Reading Hospital, having initially joined Reading Hospital’s Wound Care Center in 1976 and serving as Reading Hospital’s chief of plastic surgery from 1994 to 2000. Adjacent to these duties, he owned a private practice, Raymond L. Smith, MD, P.C., between 1981 and 2004. Earlier in his career, Dr. Smith worked at St. Joseph Medical Center and Community General Hospital in Reading, Pennsylvania.

Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Smith pursued formal education at Ursinus College, receiving a Bachelor of Science in 1962. He subsequently earned a Doctor of Medicine from the Temple University Lewis Katz School of Medicine in 1966 and completed a residency in general surgery at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate Hospital in 1973. Dr. Smith was recognized as chief resident in general surgery at Geisinger Medical Center from 1973 to 1974 before completing his residency in plastic surgery at the Milton Hershey Medical Center at Pennsylvania State University in 1976. Punctuating these appointments, Dr. Smith served in the United States Air Force Medical Corps, achieving the ranks of first lieutenant and captain.

As a testament to his success in his industry, Dr. Smith has received numerous accolades, having earned the 50-Year Achievement Award from the Berks County Medical Society. A lifetime member and fellow of the American College of Surgeons, he enjoys spending his leisure time at his local Advent Lutheran Church and partaking in such creative activities as writing, photography, oil painting and sculpting. Notably, he owns a home studio where he works diligently on his artistic work on a regular basis.

In the coming years, Dr. Smith aims to continue serving in his present position while allocating time to his hobbies, family and friends. He is supported by his wife, Coralynn, to whom he has been married for more than 50 years.
