A U.S. Army veteran, Scott C. Schurz desired to enter the field of journalism due to his heritage of journalists. Graduating with a bachelor’s degree from Denison University in 1957, he first served as an assistant instructor at the University of Maryland before enrolling in the military until his discharge in 1960. For the following six years, he was an administrative assistant at the South Bend Tribune in Indiana while also serving as a circulation consultant with Imperial Valley Press in El Centro, California, for one year. Soon thereafter, Mr. Schurz served as assistant to the publisher of the Herald-Times, Inc., and publisher and editor-in-chief of Hoosier Times, Inc., where he subsequently became chairman. Impressively, Hoosier Times included the Bloomington and Bedford newspapers, with the addition of several other south-central Indiana newspapers.
From 1970 to 2020, Mr. Schurz was director and chairman of Schurz Communications, Inc. Heavily involved with the Inter-American Press Association during his career, he was named an honorary life president and has served on their board of directors since 1995. Also maintaining membership with the Indiana University Foundation, the Hoosier Press Association, the Inland Press Association and the International Newspaper Marketing Association, among other notable organizations, Mr. Schurz has also served his community with the United Way of Monroe County, the Bloomington Boys’ Club and the Community Foundation Area Arts Council.

Proud of having traveled to more than 100 countries, he hopes to have instilled in his family the importance of giving back to the community. He notes that many accomplishments in life are a privilege and one has the duty to provide their community, friends and family with the lessons they have been taught.
Mr. Schurz emphasizes that he is a “people person” and attributes his success in the journalism industry to his innate social skills. He also attributes his success to having a good education, having the ability to listen, and accepting and learning from his own mistakes.
Born in 1936 to parents Franklin Dunn and Martha Schurz, Mr. Schurz currently resides in Belleair, Florida, with his wife. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been highlighted in myriad Who’s Who publications.
