After receiving a master’s degree in teaching and mathematics from Michigan State University in 1965, Charles H. Neumann commenced his career as a science teacher at Alpena Public Schools in Michigan. Holding the position for one year, he moved on to Alpena Community College, where he served as an instructor of mathematics and department chair from 1966 to 1984 and 1969 to 1984, respectively. In the latter half of his career, Mr. Neumann served Oakland Community College in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, as a professor of mathematics and statistics from 1984 until attaining emeritus status in 2009.
Initially interested in becoming an electrical engineer, Mr. Neumann became enthralled with mathematics and decided to emphasize his studies in the subject. Alongside his primary vocation, he has dedicated his time to several civic involvements, particularly Michigan Education Special Services, where he has been served as a vice president since 2005, trustee from 1975 to 1993 and again since 2002, and president from 1976 to 1993. Likewise, he has maintained membership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and the Vision Services Plan Board of Michigan, Ohio and Kentucky.
Mr. Neumann advises future professionals to continue expanding their knowledge, as learning is infinite. He says that everyone must remain abreast of new approaches within the industry and be open to change, as well as incorporate humor into lectures.
To keep aware of industry developments, Mr. Neumann has maintained affiliation with the National Education Association, where he was a delegate and member of the advisory committee. Likewise, he is a past president and vice president of the Oakland Community College Faculty Association, past vice president of two year colleges of the Michigan Association for Higher Education, and past board of directors member of the Michigan Education Association.
