Dr. Samuel Ralph Newcom is a coveted medical educator who celebrates more than 40 years in the field. After obtaining an MD from the University of Southern California in 1969, he served as an intern with the U.S. Public Health Service for one year, a resident at the University of Southern California for two years and a fellow at the University of California San Francisco for two years. From there, Dr. Newcom became an instructor of medicine at the University of Oregon and a medical oncologist and hematologist at the Portland Clinic from 1974 to 1975 before serving as an assistant professor and chief of the medical oncology clinic at UC San Francisco from 1975 to 1979. Spending the following five years at the Oregon Health Science University as an associate professor and head of medical oncology, he was a longstanding professor of medicine at Emory University from 1984 until attaining emeritus status.
A presenter to local, national and international scientific organizations, Dr. Newcom was the chief of the leukemia services at Grady Memorial Hospital and chief of hematology/oncology services at the Atlanta VA Hospital. During his tenure, he edited “Supplemental 5 Blood” and “Hematologic Malignancies in the Adult” in 1977 and 1979, respectively, as well as served as the assistant editor of the American Journal of Medical Science in 1995. A prolific author as well, he has contributed articles to professional journals.
Dr. Newcom is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and is board certified in internal medicine, hematology and medical oncology. A past fellow of the American Cancer Society, he has been honored for his contributions to the field. He
is a grantee of the American Cancer Society, the National Institutes of Health and M.J. Murdoc Trust. However, he cites the highlights of his career to be pursuing research in the laboratory and taking care of patients.
