Supported by nearly 60 years of practiced experience in academia, Sister Eileen Bridget Murphy has been serving as a volunteer mathematics teacher and volunteer computer applications teacher at the College of Our Lady of the Elms in Chicopee, MA, since 2006 after retiring as an assistant professor, a role she held between 1984 and 2006. During her tenure at the college, she also chaired the department of mathematics and science between 1985 and 1990 and the mathematics and science division between 1987 and 1989. Prior to these positions, Sister Murphy was a teacher and department chair at Holyoke Catholic High School between 1971 and 1984. In this role, she introduced computer learning into the curriculum in 1980. She commenced her career as a mathematics teacher at Cathedral High School in 1961, holding the position for a decade. Cathedral High School recently merged with Holyoke Catholic High School in 2015 to form Pope Francis High School.
Throughout her career, Sister Murphy has dedicated her time to numerous civic endeavors. She is a past board of directors member of the Mont Marie Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. She is also a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield, as well as past co-treasurer and financial team member. For a brief period of time, she was also a volunteer computer teacher at the Hampden County Correctional Center with the Hampden County Sheriff ’s Department. From 1991 to 1992, she sat on the steering committee on accreditation with the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
To remain abreast of changes in the industry, Sister Murphy maintained affiliation with the Association for Computing Machinery as past secretary and public relations committee member within the western Massachusetts chapter. As a testament to her success, she received an Economics of Private Enterprise Grant from Strathmore Paper Company (now known as Strathmore Artist Papers) in 1978. Currently residing in Holyoke, MA, Sister Murphy enjoys knitting and solving puzzles in her spare time. She also loves contributing her efforts to various multiple sclerosis support groups.
